Does this type of message above ^^^^^^ ring any bells for anyone?
Yeah, probably because when you were 12 or 13, a newbie on Facebook and you found our your friends or siblings password it was the funniest thing ever. This was your first encounter with the concept of hacking, am I right? Makes it seem pretty easy, guessing that their password was your first pet’s name, their birthday or your mum’s maiden name?
Well, sure it is easy but let’s talk about hacking on a broader scale, like hacking into a government computer system and gaining information- now that, that is a whole other situation.
So let’s start with the basics, hacking is the process of illegally gaining access to computer systems and gaining data unethically. Many people who engage in such activity, will leak these files in hopes to achieve something, this is called ‘hacktivism’ – is the act of hacking, or breaking into a computer system, for a politically or socially motivated purpose. The individual who performs an act of hacktivism is said to be a hacktivist .
Hacking is possible thanks to distributed networks, the ability of having one individual send out mass amounts of information through individual nodes broadcasting to entire platforms and networks. Hacking’s goals, generally, is to have a free flow of information- hackers often believe that society should be allowed the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
The video below discusses the origins of hacktivism and who ‘Anonymous’ are
Anonyomous- the most well-known but unknown hackers there are, they are known only by the Guy Fawkes mask.
Some fear this mask, others praise it.
The jury is still out on whether or not Anonymous are a blessing or curse for society. Anonymous are a group of activists whose main aim is to target establishment hypocrisy. Anonymous is known to vigorously go after its targets. It has been associated with crashing Web servers, website defacement and leaking hacked private information.
People are torn whether they are a good thing or not, however they gained some respect for their stance against ISIS-the group are quite active in taking down any website that copies or spreads the propaganda of the terrorist outfit.
Hacking will always be a controversial topic, you just need to choose your battles.
